Scholarly Contributions
Al Kaye has contributed to several publications in his career from Journal Articles to non-refereed magazines and was a reader for the Therapeutic Recreation Journal at one time. Articles have been published in Journal of Leisure Research, Rehabilitation Nursing, Challenge Magazine, and Golf Digest. Kaye have written or contributed to several publications to include: ATRA Guidelines for Ethical Practice of Recreational Therapy; ATRA Guide to Rehabilitation and Psychiatric Pharmacology for Recreation Therapy; Therapeutic Recreation Case Studies and Exercises; Trauma Informatics; Adaptive Golf Training Manual; and was co-editor of the Tennessee Parks & Recreation Association magazine.

Founding 100 members of ATRA, ATRA Ethics Committee Chair, ATRA TN State Representative, Southeast Recreational Therapy Symposium Board member from 1981 to 2016 (35 years)in various capacities from site chair to chair, and past chair duties. NCTRC Standards Review Committee and NCTRC Board of Directors holding the posts of Chairs of the Board. Kaye is a USGA Member and DSUSA/Move United Member. Kaye is a past member of the Knoxville Advisory Committee for the Handicapped, which is now known as the Committee on Disability Issues for the Mayor of Knoxville, and was the chair and past chair. Kaye worked on the committee to perform the first accessibility survey of the City of Knoxville in 1985, before the ADA. Kaye worked on the first accessible playground in Knoxville. Kaye served as the Chair of the Patricia Neal Roof Top Therapy Park, which won the Garden Club of America National Award. Kaye helped to develop the Knoxville Area Brain Injury Support Group. Kaye designed the first accessible HABITAT house in the Knoxville area.

Recipient of multiple awards both locally and nationally to include: Jim WInthers Volunteer Award from DSUSA/Move United for Alpine Skiing, Pfeiffer University Sports Hall of Fame in Soccer, ATRA President’s Award, Ft. Sanders Foundation Community Service Award, Knoxville Business Journal Healthcare Hero Award, Knoxville Urban Development Service Award, Disabilities Resource Center ADA Award, Covenant Health Everest Award as outstanding achievement out of 10,000 employees for the IRC Program, Gean Baron Memorial Award for Beech Mt. Adaptive Snow Skiing, Tim Craven Memorial Award, Charlie Mink Volunteer Award for Patricia Neal Golf Classic, Missy & Bob Burke Award for Adventure Amputee Camp, Recognized by the SRTS Board with the Al Kaye SRTS Poster Presentations; Written grants for program services for over $1 Million and have helped to raise over $9 million with Ft. Sanders Foundation. Developed the Patricia Neal Innovative Recreation Cooperative, which is an education and awareness program for individuals with challenges in the East TN area, having served over 30K participants through adaptive sports. Volunteered and coordinated the Beech Mountain Resort Learn to Ski event for 41 years. Advisor for several different community service organizations and for the UT-Knoxville Curriculum Advisory Panel. Presented and lectured on various levels, from the classroom to conferences for local colleges, universities, and organizations.
