The National Academy of Recreational Therapists proudly sponsors award programs that recognize outstanding achievements and support emerging professionals in our field.
NART Future Scholars
Eligibility
Applicants must be current or recent master’s students in therapeutic recreation or a related field with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, planning to begin doctoral studies within three years. They should hold or be working toward CTRS/LRT credentials, have faculty sponsorship, be an ATRA member, and be able to attend and participate fully in the ATRA Annual Conference.
Criteria
Applicants are evaluated on academic achievement and professional credentials, demonstrated scholarly potential through research, publications, or presentations, and a clear commitment to pursuing doctoral studies in therapeutic recreation or a related field. Reviewers also consider the overall professionalism, quality, and presentation of application materials.
Application Process
The application packet provides everything needed to apply for fellowship recognition. The packet contains eligibility requirements, selection criteria, step-by-step application instructions, the application form, and guidance for faculty sponsors supporting candidates.

Marcia Carter Best Paper Award
Eligibility
Each year, one manuscript from the Therapeutic Recreation Journal – Annual in Therapeutic Recreation (issues 3 and 4 of the previous year and issues 1 and 2 of the current year) will be selected for the Marcia Carter Best Paper Award.
Criteria
The winning manuscript will significantly advance the field by contributing new knowledge or best practices, meeting high research and writing standards, and offering innovative approaches that improve services and outcomes. It should strengthen the profession’s evidence base, support effective use of the APIE-D process, and promote practices that benefit diverse clients and interprofessional collaboration.
